EE 4400 Directed Study

Overview

Variable 1 to 4 credit hours Credit Hours 
Prerequisite: Approval of instructor and department chair

This course covers special topics and seminars of an advanced nature, external to regular course offerings that allow a student to work individually with an instructor. A Directed Study may include original research projects and/or practicum experiences. Repeatable two times for credit.

For a 3 credit hour directed study (0-9-3)

9 hours per week = 1 hour research meeting + 8 hours of lab time (in blocks of 2, 3, or 4 hours)

Weekly meeting time and lab times are scheduled the week before the first week of class. 

Description

First week

  • Specify goals, expectations, and plan of research
  • Project management using a Gantt chart
  • Using order request spreadsheet for ordering parts
  • Navigating in OneDrive
  • Documentation using OneNote
  • How to create a bibliography

Midterm

  • Summarize weekly reports into a powerpoint and midterm report.
  • Assess progress and provide feedback on powerpoint presentation and report. 
  • Use towards final presentation and report.

Final

  • Present research results
  • Q&A
  • Final report in IEEE format with bibliography

Weekly Reports/Attendance

  • Use OneNote in OneDrive to update weekly progress.
  • Attendance for weekly meetings and lab times

Midterm grade

  • Midterm report and powerpoint slides (summary of work done up to midterm)
  • Powerpoint presentation
  • Figures (simulation, samples, prototypes, measurements, etc.)
  • Bibliography of references (IEEE format) 

Figures

  • High quality, publication-ready figures. For IEEE format, figures should be in .tif, .eps, and .png format with at least 300 dpi (Refer to IEEE paper template) Size and font of the numbers on the figures should be legible when inserted into the IEEE paper.
  • Two types of figures
    • compatible with IEEE publication
    • compatible with Powerpoint presentations

Final Report

  • In IEEE paper format
  • Introduction refers to references in bibliography
  • Quality of figures

Final Presentation

  • Powerpoint slides (15%)
  • Presentation (10%)

  2. Upload completed syllabus to the OneDrive folder in the link above.

  3. Email instructor your student ID number.

  4. Course goes through approval process in Curriculog (approximately 2 weeks), after which EE4400 will show in Owl Express for registration.

  5. Syllabus must be completed and uploaded two weeks before the end of the semester prior to the semester that Directed Study starts.
